Ancud means "Land of Paunchy Hills".

Some historians say that was the name of a great chieftain of the region. The truth is that since July 4, 1834, is recognized by this name.
The Ancud Commune is located in an agro-climatic zone called Maulin, which extends from the 40º S, to the eastern edge of the Great Island of Chiloe, in the parallel 44º S.

The average annual temperature is 51.6º F with a maximum mean hottest month (February) 68.1º F and a minimum average of coldest month (July) 39.2º F.

The frost-free period is from September to April. The annual precipitation is 1.890mm, and in June the rainiest month with 277mm.

The Ancud Commune is located at the northern end of the Great Island of Chiloé, to 1109 km from Santiago and 90 km south of the city of Puerto Montt, is one of the most beautiful and best equipped of the islet. According to data collected in the Census Instituro National Statistics, the municipality has an area of 1752 square kilometers and a population of 39,946 inhabitants, of whom 20.153 are women and 19.793 men.
