Myths and legends of a people

The mythology of the island of Chiloé is an endless source of legends and myths. Legends brought the Old World, which is intertwined with the legends of native peoples, and were built by the residents of this area of southern Chile, the chilotes, creating a mythological universe only compared with the mythology of ancient Greece.

This mythology is formed from the mixture of ancient religions of indigenous peoples (Chonos and Huilliche) that inhabited this area, and the legends and superstitions brought by the Spanish conquistadors in 1567 began the process of conquest in Chiloé, and thus the beginning of fusion of elements that would form an own mythology.

This mythology has grown and prospered, to remain very isolated from other beliefs and myths that developed or existed in Chile, due to the isolation suffered by the islands to be separated from the rest of the Spanish possessions in Chile when they were abandoned or destroyed by the Mapuche every city between the river and canal Biobío Chacao, after the disaster Curalaba in 1598.

In this mythology, which continues in force in the twenty-first century, reflects the importance of the sea in the lives of chilotes.
