"Towards the Islands! Said. Those were days of trust and were supported by trees illustrious nothing seemed to us far, everything could become entangled in any moment in the light that we produced. With this song comes optimism to the Isla Grande de Chiloé, Ancud to live in one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, Pablo Neruda, Nobel Prize in Literature.
To better understand the history of Chiloé, Ancud especially, we must know some of their more illustrious visitors who passed by here and lived. Between 1925 and 1926, the largest Chilean poet set in Ancud, the age of 21. It produces some of its greatest literary Expressions, including "The inhabitant and Hope", his only novel, and also other books like "Rings," "Man's Attempt Infinity" and "A Residence on Earth".
And his historian tells us: "Paul came to the island, happy and cheerful ..." |

Charles Darwin |
Another rare traveler who was attracted by the magic of the land, was the English naturalist and father of evolution theory of Charles Darwin. He visited Chiloé during the summer of 1834-1835, and wrote about his Impressions of southern Chile, eu his diaries.
"The island is about 90 miles long and nearly 30 wide. The terrain is hilly but not mountainous and is covered completely by one great forest, except for a few small open spaces around houses. "

"The forest of huge trees, vines and ferns tight, pierced with moisture, forms a dark green that seems to set the absolute master of the island ... Large trees whose trunks are real creepers link walls on either side of the road ... "

These two views illustrious mark the contemporary history of Chiloé, yet its recorded history dates back over 4200 years BC, found in archaeological Quilo Bridge, the oldest archaeological site in the archipelago, where there are witnesses for the remains of human groups settled along the Rio Quilo, whittling away, projectile points, to hunt its food sector. And for thousands of years people were going through that region, villages and ancestors as Huilliches Chonos.
The Huilliche and Chonos are two groups from which the Spanish found on his arrival in Chiloé, in 1557, ten years before the takeover by Ruiz de Gamboa, who established the encomienda system that allowed settlers to exploit the indigenous communities. |

In 1608 the Jesuits came to the archipelago evagelización designing a system known as "circular mission. Missionaries visited the chapels from spring through early fall, according to a preset schedule, moving into indigenous craft, called WAMP.

On January 22, 1826 was annexed Chiloé to the Chilean territory, with Colonel Jose Santiago Aldunate as governor, leaving to be the last Spanish stronghold in South America after the Spanish crown took possession of these lands in 1558, when they were baptized like New Galicia by Martin Ruiz de Gamboa.

Don Carlos Berenguer |
The city of Ancud was founded on 20 August 1768 by Brigadier Spanish, Captain of Dragoons, Don Carlos Berenguer, after the Viceroy of Peru Jose Amat propose fortifying Chiloé and found a villa that would transform this point in the southern territories ingranqueable a wall against any attempt of occupation.
Amat The draft was approved by Royal Ordinance of August 20, 1767. To this end Carlos de Berenguer was appointed Governor of Chiloé, reaching the archipelago (Chacao) on June 6, 1768, immediately aborcándose fortification plan and foundation of the Villa.
Although have not been able to view the minutes of the foundation, it is assumed that Berenguer levels rose, drew, he founded and began erecting fortifications and the first houses in the village, not beyond the month of August, 1768 . |
In honor of King Charles III, founded that year, the Fort Real de San Carlos and Villa San Carlos de Chiloe, modern city of Ancud. The first inhabitants were about 50 cavalry soldiers and their families who moved from Chacao, plus some neighbors already inhabited the land that today is Ancud.
In summary, Carlos Berenguer's plan was to found a population that is both formal Villa, is also a port and strong magnet for the scattered population and center where should finally converge on internal trade, the only international port of Chiloe "bulwark" of the Southern Pacific in the military. |

The Spanish presence is consolidated in the Southern Cone of America until January 22, 1826 with the Treaty of Tantauco, where General Quintanilla left the territory being annexed by the Chilean territory Chiloé, Ancud designating, as the capital of the Province, the August 30, 1826, the year in the province of Chiloe. |

Ancud, inserted in the Tenth Region of the Lakes of the Province of Chiloé, has the following geographic boundaries:
- NORTH: Canal de Chacao, separating us from the shores of Llanquihue.
- SOUTH: River Puntra (Km 42, Route 5 south). Separates the Southwest of the Commune of Dalcahue and continues to the Rio Butalcura in imaginary line to the west and out into the Pacific, a little south of the island Metalqui.
- EAST: Gulf of Ancud, south of Linao, separates it from the Commune of Quemchi.
- West: Pacific Ocean.
The long isolation, climate and the mixture of two peoples, have given the people of this archipelago a character that has intrigued and attracted many mainland. Its wooden buildings, crafts, tools to suit their own needs and beliefs, the product of a mixture of mythology and Catholicism, is the hallmark and defining the nature of Chiloe, people loving, kind and deeply in love with her island.
Thus we can see that much history and many people have passed through these parts millenarian, leaving their footprints in history. It may be that the reason for the magic that enchants thousands of tourists from around the world who visit us years mapping year.
